Sponsor Schools
What is a "sponsor school"? Our sponsor schools serve as sites for enhancing the professional preparation of the Project Athena fellows. Each Project Athena fellow makes an extended visit to a sponsor school, which provides accommodations and other related support. The sponsor school provides the fellow with a faculty mentor who shares insights into teaching, research and service in the type of professional practice degree program where many of the fellows will become faculty.
Recruitment & Role Models. Sponsor schools are sources of potential recruits for LIS doctoral programs. Of the 56 LIS schools, only 18 have PhD granting programs. Students in the other 38 schools are more likely to think of their master's as a terminal degree. While Project Athena fellows are staying at the sponsor schools, they model the behavior of doctoral degree seeking student in LIS research programs for the master's students they encounter. While doing so, they build relationships and cultivate possible recruits for doctoral programs in the field.
